An Upsun alternative for Laravel teams.
Upsun, formerly Platform.sh, is a Git-driven platform from Paris, with preview environments for every branch and pricing per resource, on AWS, Azure, Google Cloud and OVHcloud. Brewless instead deploys your Laravel app into your own Scaleway and bunny.net accounts, two European-owned clouds, as containers that can stop when nobody visits.

Upsun and Brewless at a glance
| Topic | Upsun | Brewless |
|---|---|---|
| Company | Platform.sh SAS, trading as Upsun, Paris, France. | Coding Agency, Meppel, the Netherlands. |
| How your app runs | A container platform-as-a-service, configured in .upsun/config.yaml, with autoscaling for apps, workers and database replicas. | Serverless containers: your app starts with traffic and stops when it is quiet. There are no servers to manage. |
| Whose account | Upsun’s managed infrastructure. | Yours: your own Scaleway project and bunny.net account. Brewless is the control plane and is not in the path of your visitors. |
| Infrastructure | AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, OVHcloud and IBM, operated by Upsun. | Scaleway (France) for your app, bunny.net (Slovenia) for the edge in front of it. Both European companies. |
| Regions in Europe | AWS in Dublin and Stockholm, Azure in Paris, OVHcloud in Paris, and Google Cloud in Berlin and Zurich, among others. | Paris, Amsterdam, Warsaw and Milan. |
| Scales to zero | No: its documentation says scaling to zero is not supported. Inactive environments pause after 15 days. | Yes, when you set the minimum to zero. |
| Price | €9 a month per project and €10 per user, plus CPU, memory and storage per second. 15-day free trial. | Free to try with one application. Paid plans from €15 a month, with unlimited environments on every plan. Scaleway and bunny.net bill you directly, and Brewless takes no percentage of that. |
| For Laravel | A Laravel guide, Laravel detection in project:init, the scheduler through cron or schedule:work, and Horizon and workers for queues. | Migrations as their own step in every deploy, queues on Scaleway Queues, the schedule read from your app, Artisan on the live release, and brewless init to start from a vapor.yml. |
What Upsun does well
- Preview environments for every Git branch, with cloned data.
- Detailed pricing per resource, per second.
- A wide choice of clouds and regions.
- A long compliance list: ISO 27001, SOC 2 Type 2, PCI and HIPAA.
Where Brewless is different
European-owned providers
Brewless runs only on Scaleway and bunny.net, both European companies. Most Upsun regions run on American clouds; OVHcloud is the European-owned one among them.
Your own accounts
With Brewless, the Scaleway project and the bunny.net account are yours and bill you directly. On Upsun, the infrastructure and the bill are Upsun’s.
Scale to zero
Brewless containers can stop when nobody visits, so a quiet app costs next to nothing in compute.
No fee per user
The Business plan includes unlimited team members and applications, with no fee per user or per project.
Which one fits?
Pick Upsun if
- Branch previews with cloned data are central to how you work.
- You run several languages and stacks.
- You need a particular hyperscaler region or compliance certificate.
Pick Brewless if
- You want your app with European-owned providers only.
- You want the infrastructure in your own name.
- You want containers that stop when it is quiet.
Moving from Upsun to Brewless
Your .upsun/config.yaml maps onto brewless.yml: build and deploy hooks become build and release commands, workers become your queues, and the crons come from your Laravel schedule. Copy your database, test, then move your domain.
