A Laravel Envoyer alternative with the servers included.

Laravel Envoyer is a deployment service: it puts new releases of your PHP app on servers you already run, over SSH, with zero downtime and rollbacks, also across several servers. Brewless deploys too, but there are no servers to run: it builds your Laravel app into a container and runs it serverless in your own Scaleway account, behind bunny.net.

Laravel Envoyer and Brewless at a glance

Topic Laravel Envoyer Brewless
Company Laravel Holdings Inc., United States. Coding Agency, Meppel, the Netherlands.
How your app runs Deployments only: Envoyer connects to your Ubuntu or FreeBSD servers over SSH and switches releases without downtime, with health checks and rollbacks. Serverless containers: your app starts with traffic and stops when it is quiet. There are no servers to manage.
Whose account Yours: servers you already run, for example servers managed by Forge. Yours: your own Scaleway project and bunny.net account. Brewless is the control plane and is not in the path of your visitors.
Infrastructure Any server it can reach over SSH. Scaleway (France) for your app, bunny.net (Slovenia) for the edge in front of it. Both European companies.
Regions in Europe Those of your servers. Paris, Amsterdam, Warsaw and Milan.
Scales to zero Not applicable: your servers stay on. Yes, when you set the minimum to zero.
Price Basic $10, Plus $20 and Premium $50 a month, by number of projects, with unlimited deployments and team members. Your servers are billed by your provider. Free to try with one application. Paid plans from €15 a month, with unlimited environments on every plan. Scaleway and bunny.net bill you directly, and Brewless takes no percentage of that.
For Laravel Made by the Laravel team, for any PHP project with extra care for Laravel: deployment hooks, cron heartbeats and deploys to several servers at once. Migrations as their own step in every deploy, queues on Scaleway Queues, the schedule read from your app, Artisan on the live release, and brewless init to start from a vapor.yml.

What Laravel Envoyer does well

  • Atomic zero-downtime deployments with one-click rollbacks.
  • One project deployed to several servers at once.
  • Works with the servers and providers you already have.
  • A flat monthly price with unlimited deployments and team members.

Where Brewless is different

The servers included

Brewless does not need servers you run: your app runs in serverless containers that Scaleway operates.

Scales on its own

Instead of a fixed set of servers, copies of your app start with traffic and stop when it is quiet.

Queues and schedule included

Queue workers and scheduled tasks run next to your web container, without Supervisor or cron on a server.

A European control plane

Brewless is run from the Netherlands, on European providers. Envoyer is run by Laravel Holdings Inc. in the United States.

Which one fits?

Pick Laravel Envoyer if

  • You already run servers and only want safer deployments.
  • You deploy one app to several servers behind a load balancer.
  • You want to keep full control of the machines.

Pick Brewless if

  • You would rather not run servers at all.
  • Your traffic varies, or the app is idle at night.
  • You want deployments, scaling, queues and logs in one place.

Moving from Laravel Envoyer to Brewless

Your Envoyer deployment hooks map onto brewless.yml: install and build steps become build commands, and php artisan migrate becomes a release command. Queue workers and cron on your servers are not needed. Files on local disk move to a bucket, your database to a managed database at Scaleway. Test, then move your domain.

Questions about Laravel Envoyer

Is Laravel Envoyer a hosting provider?
No. Envoyer deploys your app to servers you run elsewhere. It does not provide the servers.
Do I still need Envoyer next to Forge?
Forge has zero-downtime deploys for sites on one server built in. Envoyer is for deploying one project to several servers.
Envoyer or Brewless?
Envoyer makes deployments to your own servers safe. Brewless deploys and runs your Laravel app serverless in your own Scaleway account, so there are no servers to keep.
