A Google Cloud Run alternative on European clouds.
Google Cloud Run runs any container as an autoscaling service in your own Google Cloud project, scales to zero and bills per use. Running Laravel there means putting the pieces together yourself. Brewless works the same way, serverless and in your own accounts, on Scaleway and bunny.net, with the Laravel parts already put together.

Google Cloud Run and Brewless at a glance
| Topic | Google Cloud Run | Brewless |
|---|---|---|
| Company | Google. Most European customers contract with Google Cloud EMEA Limited in Dublin, Ireland; Google is based in the United States. | Coding Agency, Meppel, the Netherlands. |
| How your app runs | Serverless containers: services that answer HTTP requests and scale, jobs that run to completion, and worker pools for background work. | Serverless containers: your app starts with traffic and stops when it is quiet. There are no servers to manage. |
| Whose account | Yours: your own Google Cloud project and billing account. | Yours: your own Scaleway project and bunny.net account. Brewless is the control plane and is not in the path of your visitors. |
| Infrastructure | Google Cloud. A Laravel app typically also uses Cloud SQL, Cloud Storage, Secret Manager and Cloud Build. | Scaleway (France) for your app, bunny.net (Slovenia) for the edge in front of it. Both European companies. |
| Regions in Europe | Finland, Stockholm, Madrid, Belgium, the Netherlands, Milan, Paris, Warsaw, Berlin, Turin, London, Frankfurt and Zurich. | Paris, Amsterdam, Warsaw and Milan. |
| Scales to zero | Yes: without requests, the last instance is removed too. | Yes, when you set the minimum to zero. |
| Price | Per use, in 100-millisecond steps: from $0.000024 per vCPU-second and $0.40 per million requests, with a monthly free tier. Databases, storage and builds are billed separately. | Free to try with one application. Paid plans from €15 a month, with unlimited environments on every plan. Scaleway and bunny.net bill you directly, and Brewless takes no percentage of that. |
| For Laravel | No Laravel guide in its documentation. Google’s Laravel sample covers Cloud SQL, Secret Manager, files on Cloud Storage and migrations as Cloud Run jobs; the schedule goes through Cloud Scheduler. | Migrations as their own step in every deploy, queues on Scaleway Queues, the schedule read from your app, Artisan on the live release, and brewless init to start from a vapor.yml. |
What Google Cloud Run does well
- True scale to zero, fine-grained billing per use and a sizeable free tier.
- Many European regions.
- Runs any container, next to the whole range of Google Cloud services.
- Runs in your own project, under your own access rules.
Where Brewless is different
European clouds
Brewless runs on Scaleway (France) and bunny.net (Slovenia). Cloud Run is part of Google Cloud, an American company.
Laravel already put together
Brewless builds the container, runs migrations as their own step, starts queue workers and reads the schedule from your app. On Cloud Run you assemble that from several Google services.
One file for the app
brewless.yml describes your environments, and Brewless creates the database, queue and bucket at Scaleway from it.
A console for your team
Releases, logs, variables and Artisan commands for your Laravel app in one place.
Which one fits?
Pick Google Cloud Run if
- You already use Google Cloud and its services.
- You are at home with containers and want to assemble the pieces yourself.
- You run more than Laravel and want one platform for all of it.
Pick Brewless if
- You want serverless Laravel on European-owned clouds.
- You want migrations, queues and the schedule handled for you.
- You want one tool for a Laravel team, not a cloud console.
Moving from Google Cloud Run to Brewless
Your Dockerfile is not needed: Brewless builds the container from your repository. Cloud Run jobs for migrations become release commands, Cloud Scheduler entries come from your Laravel schedule, and worker pools become your queues. Copy your database from Cloud SQL and your files from Cloud Storage to Scaleway, test, then move your domain.
Questions about Google Cloud Run
- Can Google Cloud Run scale to zero?
- Yes. Without requests, Cloud Run removes the last instance as well, unless you set a minimum number of instances.
- Does Cloud Run support Laravel?
- It runs any container, so it runs Laravel. Google publishes a Laravel sample, but its documentation has no Laravel guide; queues and the schedule are yours to set up with other Google services.
- Cloud Run or Brewless?
- Both run your app serverless in an account of your own. Pick Cloud Run for Google Cloud and any kind of container, and Brewless for Laravel on Scaleway and bunny.net in Europe.
